feb 28, 1980 - Soviet-Afghan war
Description:
A Cold War proxy war between the Soviet-supported communist People’s Democratic party of Afghanistan and CIA-supported insurgent groups called the Mujahideen. Soviet forces withdrew in ‘88 and ‘89. This war was instrumental to the fall of the Soviet Union because it created a rift between the soviet military and the communist party, undermined the idea of the Red Army as unbeatable, and represents the US’s reign as a global superpower imposing its neoliberal ideology across the globe.
