aug 9, 1945 - The U.S. drops the atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan ending WWII
Description:
After years of fighting against Japan, the U.S. decided that they were going to end the war by bombing Japan for the second time. Only three days earlier, they bombed Hiroshima, Japan, and when Japan was still fighting back, the U.S. did more damage by dropping a second bomb that was more damaging than the first.
This event is important because it is what caused Japan to surrender from the war, which ended WWII. They surrendered because the effects of the bomb were killing so many people in Japan. The impact of the bombs alone killed a lot, but the radiation and chemicals in the air caused slow and painful deaths for even more people. Japan did not want any more bombs being dropped on their country, so they pulled out of the war and left the U.S. to victory. Their surrender ended World War Two officially.
