This was when the first ever atomic bomb was dropped. No other country had a reason to do this or ever felt the need. However, in order for the war to end between the U.S. and Japan, something had to be done. At the time for former President Harry Truman, it seemed like the only thing that would end this for good. He gave Japan the opportunity to surrender, or else he would drop the bomb. They chose not to surrender and suffered the consequences. The bomb killed tens of thousands of people, and still has some effects from the radiation on some people. This is significant because the was the first time nuclear technology was used in history and it is still debated today about whether it should have been dropped at all.
