aug 21, 1858 - Lincoln - Douglas Debates

Description:

The senate race between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglass in Illinois. The people of Illinois chose Douglas over Lincoln because of Douglas's free point doctrine, which stated that territories were allowed to determine whether or not slavery was allowed there, completely disregarding the Supreme Court decision, this angered the south and led to a split in the Democratic party.
