Description:
Senator Charles Sumner gives a speech about South Carolina, slandering South Carolina's senator Andrew Butler, saying various bad things about him, and stated his disagreement with the Kansas - Nebraska Act. A few days later, Preston Brooks, the nephew of Butler, came into a session and beat Sumner unconscious in the Senate Chamber. This made many people lose faith in the Legislative branch, seperating the north and south even more.
