jul 20, 1954 - Geneva Conference

Description:

A conference following on from the Korean Armistice. Various proposals for democratic elections in Korea were put forward but nothing was signed due to disagreements about the details of the elections.
A meeting of world powers also made an agreement that Vietnam would be split along the 17th parallel, with a communist north under the Viet Minh and a nationalist south under the State of Vietnam, with France withdrawing any claim to territory on the Indochinese peninsula.
It also mandated democratic elections to take place two years later to reunite Vietnam (though these never happened) and demilitarisation of the border and peace agreement.
The South (State of Vietnam) and the US didn't sign as Diem couldn't accept the idea of a nationwide election (based on a not free north) .
Eisenhower couldn't accept a communist North but agreed to not disturb the peace.
Laos and Cambodia were made neutral countries having been made independent of France in 1953 though both had communist factions (Pathet Lao and Khmer Rouge)
