jan 1, 335 - *E: Theon of Alexandria
Description:
Egypt: Theon of Alexandria is born. Theon was a Greek scholar and mathematician whose school was exclusive, highly prestigious, and doctrinally conservative in the Neoplatonic style. Theon wrote several original works, but is more noted for his editing and commentaries. His edition of Euclid’s Elements attempts to remove difficulties that might be felt by learners in studying the text. He amplified Euclid's text whenever he thought that an argument was too brief; attempted to standardize the way that Euclid wrote; and he corrected mistakes in the text. Theon's edition of Euclid's Elements became the most widely-used edition of the textbook for centuries. Nevertheless, he is perhaps most noted as father of Hypatia.
