MIDI provided a way to allow differing pieces of technology such as synths and drum machines to communicate and synchronise with eachother. The widespread used of sequencing technologoy had a major effect upon the way records sounded and their ryhthmical and musical feel in the 1980’s. Though sequencing existed before MIDI, the 80’s saw this equipment becoming easier to use and much more widely available.
