The Republican support came from businessmen, Anglo-Saxon Protestants, and the middle class. Reformers and African Americans also supported Republicans. The area of support came from the North and the state level.
Republicans favored high tariffs, low government spending, paying off the national debt, reducing the amount of paper money. They believed the government should regulate the economic and moral affairs of society

The Democratic support came from the poor, Catholics, immigrants, the South, and political machines in the North. Democrats gained support in cities.
Democrats opposed tariffs and favored states’ rights and limited power for the federal government.
