reprinted in 1912

influenced John Erskine, who was his student at Columbia

1891–1904 he was professor of comparative literature at Columbia University

Woodberry emphasized "literature was life itself," and championed reading great books (see his book, Great Writers (1912) (for more, see Cross, Oasis of Order)

He also did some pretty horrifying racist analysis of great books' greatness, tying them pretty securely to white supremacy.
