1891–1904 he was professor of comparative literature at Columbia University
Woodberry emphasized "literature was life itself," and championed reading great books (see his book, Great Writers (1912) (for more, see Cross, Oasis of Order)
He also did some pretty horrifying racist analysis of great books' greatness, tying them pretty securely to white supremacy.
