The 1936 Olympics were Hitler’s chance to advertise Germany as a metropolis to the entire world. As Goebbels worked tirelessly to expunge German streets of anti-Jewish propaganda, Hitler extended Nazi pomp and circumstance to the Olympic tradition, creating the opening ceremony as we know it today. Despite Jesse Owens’s win, Hitler was able to achieve his goals of validating Aryan superiority through the German team’s success and meeting with prospective funders through soirees with wealthy international fascists like Henry Ford.
