Description:
The Explorer 1 was equipped with a cosmic ray detector which measured the radiation of the Earth while it was in orbit. The satellite was the first satellite to carry scientific instruments. It orbited approximately 12.5 times a day. During its time in orbit, the Explorer 1 discovered high-radiation bands on the Earth which are now known as the Van Allen Radiation Belts. This was the first steps of America’s contribution of the Space Race.
