feb 23, 1381 - the peasants revolt

Description:

2. The Peasant’s Revolt
2.1 What was the event
The peasant’s revolt, also known as the Wat Tyler’s rebellion or the great rising. it took place 30th of May 1381 to November 1381, uprising in the south-eastern countries and east Anglia, and wasn’t such a big deal for other close by colonies. The peasants were later on called the rebels because they weren’t listening and doing what they think was right. On one side you have the peasants protesting for male freedom and equality in wealth. The peasants revolt had various causes like political and social-economic tension created by the black death in the 1340s. there were high taxes being laid by the government
2.2 When was the event
The lead up to the peasant’s revolt was the black death which took place in 1340, near central Asia then spreading to Crimea the also travelling along the silk road. Crimea is the northern coast of the black sea, in the East of Europe. The peasants were having to be on top at all times to serve their family’s as well as their lord, which was whoever they were working for.
The event went from May 1381 to November 1381. On June the 7th the peasants of Essex marched down to Maidstone to meet their leader, Wat Tyler. On June 14 King Richard 2nd negotiated at mile end, London. June 15; king Richard 2nd meets the rebels again at Smithfield. Watt Tyler died on the 15th of June 1381 which left the rebels dispersing. The event ended November 1381.
2.3 Who was involved
John Bampton was a royal in Essex on the 30th of may 1381 who attempted to collect unpaid poll taxes in the town of Brentwood which ended in a violent confrontation. The peasants protested against the English government in anger because they weren’t getting the freedom and wealth that their lord promised them just before the black death. King Richard the 2nd was also an important factor because he was the one that decided to negotiate with the peasants twice. Once in Mile end and the second at Smithfield.
2.4 Why were they involved
The cause of this was the black death. This meant that the lord had to efface his promise to the peasants. That didn’t end well. The peasants still wanted the deal. The peasants kept fighting till the government gave them what they promised. The peasants protested, killed and disobeyed until they got that freedom. That’s how much it meant to them back then.
2.5 Where did the event happen
The event started in Essex, England with the peasants chasing Thomas Bampton out of swindling. The event then moved to mile end for a negotiation with king Richard the 2nd. The event then forwarded on to Smithfield for another negotiation with the king again. The problem got bigger and bigger. There were peasants from Essex, Kent, Hertfordshire and Suffolk etc… The event stopped with king Richard ordering his troops to kill the rebels. His troops killed thousands of them. It ended on the November of 1381.
2.6 How did it began
It started with the black death fading which killed thousands of people including heaps of workers. So many people died the land was short of workers so the king ordered the lords to not let them go. Before the black death the lords and king promised them freedom and equality in wealth. But they didn’t keep there promise. The peasants then came towards London.
