feb 19, 1816 - Rene Laennec Invents the Stethoscope
Description:
Laennec used stethoscope to hear what was going on in the lungs of TB patients, then compare to what was observed in lungs during autopsy. This is a "perfect symbol" of the culture during the Birth of the Clinic where scientists (esp. neurologists) tried to link the facts observed at the beside to the facts observed at the autopsy. Charcot trained as a physician under this atmosphere.
