Description:
Moroni’s work abridging the Book of Ether likely took a good deal of time as he was constantly on the run from the Lamanites. However, when he had finally finished he realized two things that he never thought would happen.
First, he was still alive. Living under constant threat of death he had thought that he would be caught and slain long before.
Second, he still had some room left on the Gold Plates. He had thought that his abridgment of the Jaredite record would have taken all the remaining space, and yet there was still some space left over.
So, with these two circumstances providing the opportunity Moroni decided to add a few more things to the record, this time being his own work. What he had already done had been the command given him by his father. What he was now going to add was his own thoughts and what he believed would be beneficial to his future audience.
