We do not know exactly when Mormon died, but Moroni does tell us that he died in battle. This could not have been the battle at Cumorah, as we know that he survived that. So, the 24 survivors must have continued for at least a short time. It is likely that they survived because they were the few who were still faithful to the gospel, as Mormon and Moroni had been.
But, as the Lamanites continued to hunt all surviving Nephites, killing any who would not deny Christ, it is likely that they eventually caught up to these 24 survivors. They would have been up resistance, and in such a skirmish Mormon was killed.
I place his death when he was 79 years old.
