Description:
Having spent several years gathering together the Nephites set up their camp around the Hill Cumorah. The Lamanites gave them about five years to gather together before they marched their armies against them.
Finally the battle commences. The two armies were massive. We are not told exactly how long the battle lasted. Most historical battles of this magnitude have lasted few days, but the record seems to indicate it was only one day at Cumorah.
Though the Nephites fought with great boldness, the Lamanites soon overwhelmed them. By the end of the battle the Nephites had been destroyed as a people.
The Nephite army had been 230,000 men. 24 were left alive when the battle was over and the Lamanites returned to their camp. Mormon was among the survivors, though he was grievously wounded. His son, Moroni, also survived. We are not given the names of the last of the survivors.
We are told that some did escape the battle and flee to the south, but are not given a number.
Mormon was 74 years old at the time of this battle.
