jun 17, 381 - Mormon Writes Record
Description:
While the Nephites were gathering to Cumorah, Mormon began writing the record that we currently have. Up to this point he had kept a detailed record of all these events on the Plates of Nephi. However, with the impending battle and the Lamanites’ propensity for destroying everything that was sacred, God commanded Mormon to hide up all the sacred records.
So, Mormon created the Gold Plates and set about abridging the records of the Nephites into a smaller, single volume. While the Plates of Nephit (especially the Large Plates) had been mainly a historical record, much like the Bible is, Mormon’s abridgement was written to be a missionary tool. Only those portions of the history that would facilitate the missionary effort were placed in this new record, and most of the historical details were excluded. Mormon even abridged the portion of the record that he had kept.
