As Mormon witnessed these scenes of carnage and fear his heart broke and his soul was pained. So he repented of the oath he took to never lead the people.
It is likely that the people had sought out Mormon. He had led them to many great victories and was likely still remembered. We are told that the people looked to him as a savior who would once again bring them victory. So, they begged him to once again lead the armies. Mormon, loving his people and being a great patriot, agreed to once more take command of the army.
Mormon was 66 years old.
