After the great victories the Nephites had won at the City of Desolation, they began to boast in their own strength. This was not new, of course, but it was now compounded by a new wickedness. They began to swear by the heavens and even the throne of God that they would take vengeance against the Lamanites. They swore by all that was forbidden them of God that they would now go into the lands of the Lamanites and utterly destroy them.
When the Nephites began to seek revenge Mormon resigned as their commanded and refused to take any part in their planned wickedness. God declared that the Nephites had had their last chance, and now there was nothing that could prevent them from being cut off from the land. Mormon, then, became an idle witness, recording the wickedness and destruction of the people, but taking no active part in the events.
He was about 50 years old.
