After becoming Dictator for life of the Roman Republic, Julius Caesar was assassinated by members of the Roman Senate in 44 BC. The power vacuum that followed would lead to a Civil War between Mark Anthony and Octavian (Augustus Caesar) resulting in a victory for Augustus and the paving of the way for the Roman Empire.
