- at first country was poor but bc of korean war in 1950 japan could supply weapons and resources and benefitted greatly
- economic growth + new constitution written based on british parlimentary system
- allowed women's rights, education, societal reforms
- get rid of japanese militarism/ outlaws military
- redistribute agricultural land to peasants/land reform
