In this year the people began to divide into classes. The two greatest divisions were between poor and rich and learned and unlearned.
It seems that many people quickly got rich after the war. Some were likely already wealthy, but with the spoils of war and the unclaimed property caused by the many deaths, there soon arose a class of very wealthy people, while the rest of the people did not amass wealth as fast or to such a degree. To be clear, I do not think that those who gained this wealth were in anyway guilty of any wrong in doing so. But because they were able to do so they allowed themselves to become very proud and to persecute those who were not so fortunate.
For those who were able to gain this wealth they also were able to pay for great education and learning. Thus a scholarly class also arose. While this was a result of the wealthy class, it became a separate division among the people. Those who were able to attain to this learned began to mock and persecute those who were unable to attain it. Again, in the acquiring of this learning they did nothing wrong, but they allowed it to make them proud.
It is likely that this began among those who had been Gadianton Robbers, but soon it had affected all the people.
