Description:
At the age of twelve, he contracted spinal tuberculosis, which left him with permanent physical disabilities. He never grew taller than four and a half feet, was hunchbacked, and required daily care throughout adulthood.
He was educated largely by priests, aferwards he was self-educated. Too sickly for boy's sports he devoted his teenage years to reading and writing. He learned Latin, Greek, French, and Italian, and read widely in these languages.
