aug 2, 1934 - McKeon arrives

Description:

at U Chicago, helps Hutchins develop gen ed program

From Wiki on McKeon: "He viewed the aim of pluralism as not achieving a monolithic identity but rather a diversity of opinion along with mutual tolerance. He characterized his philosophy as a philosophy of culture, but it is also humanistic, a philosophy of communications and the arts, and a philosophical rhetoric.

The value of a philosophic position is determined by demonstrating its value as an explanation or as an instrument of discovery. The pragmatism of Richard Rorty owes much to McKeon, his teacher."

McKeon, Spiritual Autobiography: "Even before my medieval studies it had become apparent that Western thought is unintelligible without its Greek foundations"

McKeon's wife: "With respect to inquiry he remained committed to Woodbridge's dictum
that the source of philosophic problems was ordinary life....As a teacher he was moved by philosophic pluralism to present philosophies
of the past as essentially contemporary. He focused on the problems encountered and solutions found, and he never presented any philosopher as making
errors corrected by later philosophers. He showed how easy it is to make a
statement seem foolish when it is removed from the context that gave it meaning. He taught generations of students to re ad critically and s1'rnpathetically for
the first time."
