After the disastrous attack on the Nephites, the Gadianton Robbers fled back to the wilderness and the mountains. It seems that they were in such confusion and disarray that it took a while for them to get organized again. They didn't even have a central leader for a time.
It is not until the next year (at least 6 months later) that we are told that Zemnariah was appointed to replace Giddianhi as the leader of the Robbers. It is not unlikely that this was due to internal strike in which several contended for the position, and through violence and intrigue Zemnariah won out. However, the details are not specified in the record that we have.
Zemnariah seems to be more thoughtful in his approach than his predecessor. While Giddianhi was a great fighter, he was very direct in his approach. Zemnariah seems to have taken more time to consider the possible strategies that he could employ to conquer the Nephites.
