the disputations among the members over doctrine began to get out of hand. There was much strife and factions arose in the church. This threatened to divide the church and end the peace that the people had enjoyed.
So, Nephi and Lehi, along with others who were well versed in scripture and the gospel, traveled around to teach the people and to ensure that everyone knew the true doctrine.
Their authority in this matters seems to have been accepted by the people. The true doctrine was established and by the end of the year the disputations had ceased. The year ended in peace.
