dec 1, 1966 - In an effort to quell police violence against unarmed black people, The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense begins policing the police in armed groups

Description:

The Black Panthers asserted their individual rights to bear arms.

This was the first time that the "individual right" interpretation of the Second Amendment had been thrust into the main stream. Until this time, the vast majority of people understood the Second Amendment to refer to the "collective right" of the people to bear arms (as in militias).

They would go out in groups, following police officers around town for observation purposes only, and carrying shotguns.
