jan 6, 1444 - Beginning of Portuguese slave trade 4.1
Description:
The Portuguese began importing slaves from Africa in order to supplement to small workforce. Portugal was suffering from a lack of laborers and it became more expensive to employ a free man than to buy slaves. This led to the development of the transatlantic slave trade because it was the first time slaves were being specifically imported from Africa to Europe and the Americas.
