1444 CE The Portuguese slave trade was an incredibly harsh enterprise lasting for over 400 years. It occurred mainly in the Atlantic and slaves were traded from all of the west-African coast line, where large slave cities were founded. These cities also traded for Portuguese goods and other items. The slaves were transferred across the Atlantic Ocean to the New World where workers were in demand due to labor shortages and needs for more productivity. (4.1)
