may 18, 1863 - Siege of Vicksburg
Description:
Vicksburg, a confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River between Tennessee and Louisiana, was the location for a turning point battle which ultimately benefited the North. The location is important because the Union's strategy was to divide the Confederacy, thus severely weakening it- while also assuming control of the entire Mississippi River. The Union victory did just that and weakened Southern power significantly.
