jan 5, 1095 - 11th century. The Crusades - When Emperor Alexius I Comnenus sent a call for help, Pope Urban II instead set in motion a series of Crusades that lasted for 200 years. This was significant because the Fourth Crusade took Constantinople and the Byzantine rulers never really recovered from it.
