sep 28, 539 BC - Fall of the Neo-Babylonian Empire
Description:
At the conclusion of the Battle of Opis, the Neo-Babylonian Empire fell to the Achaemenid Empire led by Cyrus the Great. This resulted in Persia taking control of Babylon, where Cyrus and the people embraced each other.
The fate of King Nabonidus of Babylon is uncertain, but some accounts state that he was exiled and/or given a government position within Persia. In any case he never returned to his former territory.
