aug 1, 1291 - First unified Swiss state
Description:
(On this day, the peoples of Switzerland joined together under the Swiss Confederacy. The Confederacy was not ruled by a single ruler, but instead by the Tagsatzung, a legislative and executive council made up of delegates from every Swiss county. At one point the Confederacy was nominally a vassal to the Holy Roman Empire, but it did not truly lose its sovereignty until the rise of Napoleon's French Empire.)
