jan 1, 1956 - Sudan independent from joint UK/Egypt dominion
Description:
On this day, Sudan formally declared itself an independent nation. Since the late 19th century, Sudan had been considered part of the UK's Egyptian domain, and when Egypt declared independence Sudan was held in joint UK/Egypt custody. Sudan has unfortunately suffered for much of its history with dictatorship, terrorism, and civil war. In 2019 protests brought about the end of the military dictatorship, and today there is hope for Sudan's future.
