Previously not very unknown, General Sherman's was made famous after his successful March to the Sea. During this monumental march through Georgia, Sherman waged total war after attacking not only troops but anything contributing to the South's economy or ability to fight, therefore making him one of the leading architects of modern total warfare. The capture of Atlanta also played a huge role in Lincoln's reelection, boosting Union morale.
