jan 1, 1884 - Election of 1884
Description:
Cleveland was selected as the Democratic candidate because the Mugwumps were suspicious of Blaine and because Cleveland was honest, frugal conscientious, and uncompromising. The Republicans campaigned against Cleveland by raising questions about his private life. People didn't like the Republicans' dirty campaign, which has a slogan involving "Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion" that offended the Catholics.
