(Date approximate) (Long before there was Genghis Khan, there was Modu Chanyu. Modu unified the tribes of Mongolia into a confederation, largely as a protective measure against China. The Xiongnu remained united until civil war broke them apart in 60 BC. Several confederations would follow throughout Mongolian history, with Genghis Khan's being the greatest.)Added to timeline:
