oct 22, 1953 - Laos independent from France
Description:
On this day, Laos officially declared independence from France. Laos struggled for much of its history with civil war and foreign meddling, as the Soviet Union supported the nation's communist party and the United States supported the militaristic monarchy. The Soviet Union ultimately won out, and the Soviet-backed communist party of Laos has remained in power ever since. Laos struggles with human rights abuses, particularly against minorities. Hope may been on the horizon, however, as Laos has one of the fastest growing economies in the region.
