aug 15, 1948 - South Korea independent from US occupation

Description:

On this day the Korean territory administered by the United States declared independence as the Republic of Korea, or South Korea. Prior to the end of World War II, the Korean peninsula had been annexed by the Japanese Empire. When the war ended, the Korean peninsula was seized by Allied forces. The northern half was occupied by the Soviet Union, and the southern half was occupied by the United States. South Korea initially struggled with an autocratic government, but is today a healthy democracy with one of the highest levels of freedom in Asia.
