aug 1, 1934 - Haiti independent of US military occupation

Description:

On this day, Haiti was officially freed from its occupation by US military forces. The US had occupied it since World War I, when the possibility of anti-American leadership had made it nervous (said anti-American leadership had arisen shortly after the US "seized" most of the Haitian National Bank's money in 1914, but maybe that's just a coincidence). Haiti has suffered for much of its history since then with dictatorship, violence, crippling debt, and natural disasters. Today things have largely settled down, but Haiti still struggles with poverty and unrest.
