(In this year, Kingdom of Ashanti, based in the city of Kumasi in sourthern Ghana, was established. It brought most of modern Ghana under its reign, and would actually remain sovereign until the early 20th century. There was a different state called the Ghana Empire, but it was actually located far north of modern Ghana.
