On this day, Myanmar formally declared independence from the United Kingdom. Initially a democracy, Myanmar became a military dictatorship in the '60s, and has unfortunately struggled since then with civil war and human rights abuses. Some democracy was restored in the early 21st century thanks to civil rights leaders, but the military still holds a great deal of power, and Myanmar continues to struggle with civil unrest and the violent persecution of ethnic minorities.
