jan 1, 925 - King Athelstan Code for England

Description:

- This code provided physical punishment (mutilation - e.g. cutting hands - death etc). It no longer carried only compensation.
- It was the first Code for England.
- Kings from now on start to take over the administration of Justice, in an attempt to increase the effectiveness of the law.
- Serious crimes were no longer deemed only a private matter. Serious crimes are now an offense against the crown, a breach of the kings peace.
- Financial side to it: There is now a tacit agreement with the people. The king acts as a guarantor of Justice, and so the king could claim fines or impose physical offenses on the wrongdoer. The other party would gain the satisfaction of seeing the wrongdoer punished.
