The Games of the VIII Olympiad had numerous memorable moments. The opening ceremony was presided over by Kaiser Wilhelm II. After a thirty minute speech in which he described the hardships Germany faced in the war, he held a two minute moment of silence in honor of all soldiers who perished. The centerpiece of the ceremony was an aerial flyover by members of the Luftstreitkräfte, lead by Manfred von Richthofen the "Red Baron" and Hermann Göring.
Germany came out on top winning 39 gold, 27 silver, 21 bronze medals. In second game Great Britain with its 25 gold, 30 silver, 19 bronze medals. Third was the U.S. with 18 gold, 23 silver, 8 bronze medals. The final two were the Italy and Switzerland which won 8 gold, 3 silver, 7 bronze medals and 7 gold, 8 silver, 10 bronze respectively.
