The end of world war two saw millions of people displaced from their homes, unable to return. leaving them as refugees. Australia, along with other major world powers which were not greatly affected by the war, to take in many of these refugees. Australia agreed to take in refugees as Arthur Calwell believed that Australia needed a larger population than just 7 million in order to maintain national security. This plan was known as populate or perish by Arthur Calwell. These migrants were hoped to assimilate into the Australian culture, but however, they ended up failing to do sop and instead with a process of intergration.
