At this time, President Nixon would be running for reelection into office, and because of the Vietnam War, the country was greatly divided. In May of 1972, officials of Nixon’s administration broke into the Watergate headquarters and stole a mass amount of confidential documents. They also bugged phones in the office. After establishing that the bugs did not work, the burglars returned to the Watergate building in hopes of fixing them. A security guard noticed them and called the police. Nixon created a plan that would make the CIA impede on the investigation undergone in the FBI. This was a huge obstruction of justice as well as a major overstep of presidential power. In the end, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Nixon, but he resigned before impeachment occured. The Watergate Scandal left lasting distrust in U.S. politics and between the government and the people.
