Martin Luther King Jr. was a social activist and minister who played a key role in the development of the civil rights movement. Through peaceful protest, King fought for human rights and equality for African Americans. He organized things such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington. Through his activism, he became a target for white supremacists. On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated after being shot while standing on the balcony of a motel in Memphis. After his death, a national day of mourning was established as a federal holiday. This day is in remembrance of King and all that he did for this nation as far as bringing the United States one step closer to equality for all people.
