Intolerable Acts
Description:
The Intolerable Acts were laws passed by the British Parliament in 1774 after the Boston Tea Party. The first Intolerable Act was passed on March 31, 1774 and more followed. The laws were meant to punish the Massachusetts colonists for their defiance in the Tea Party protest (the reaction to changes in taxation by the British). In Great Britain, these laws were referred to as the Coercive Acts. The acts took away self-governance and historic rights of Massachusetts, triggering outrage and resistance in the Thirteen Colonies.
