Description:

Due to excessive logging and grazing by sheep, John Muir urged Congress to set aside Yosemite as a National Park. This meant that this land could not be settled or developed. This was significant because, at a time in which land was being developed rapidly, the government sought to protect beautiful natural landscapes from human use. This event represents Geography and Environment because protecting the natural environment was an important aspect of the social and political developments of this period.
